The following selective list of Bartók’s compositions only comprises his works based on identifiable folk songs and instrumental pieces mainly collected by the composer himself or his colleagues; a smaller part of the source melodies were taken from printed folk song collections. The identification of the source melodies is based on Vera Lampert, Folk Music in Bartók’s Compositions: A Source Catalog (Budapest: Helikon, 2008).

Bartók’s note in the For Children indicated Bartalus as his source. While the pitches of the last line of the stanza are different from that of the arrangement, and the meter is 4/8, in Bartalus’s version alone the 4th and 5th notes have the iambic rhythm throughout the song, as in the arrangement. By this time, Bartók should have been familiar with other variants of this tune as well, recorded by Vikár and notated in 3/8 meter. The same melody appears in no. 19 in the Forty-Four Duos but with the trochaeic rhythm in the odd-numbered measures.
